If you are thinking about buying a home in West Hartford, there is a good chance you have also started to wonder what other nearby towns might be worth considering.
West Hartford is one of the most desirable areas in Hartford County, but it is not the only option. In fact, some of the strongest opportunities for buyers come from looking just outside of it.
The key is understanding what you are trying to get more or less of compared to West Hartford. For some buyers, it is about space. For others, it is about budget, privacy, or simply a different pace.
Once you know that, the surrounding towns start to make a lot more sense.
One of the closest and most natural alternatives is Farmington. Located in the Farmington Valley, it offers a quieter, more spread-out feel while still being only a short drive from West Hartford. You still get convenience, but without the same level of activity and density. For buyers who like the location but want a slightly slower pace, Farmington is often one of the first places to look.
Avon is another town that comes up frequently in the same conversation. Also part of the Farmington Valley, Avon tends to offer larger homes and more land. Properties often feel more private, and neighborhoods are more spread out. Buyers who are looking to move out of tighter settings often find Avon to be a strong fit.
Simsbury takes that a step further. It is one of the more scenic and sought-after towns in the Farmington Valley, known for its setting and overall feel. It tends to attract buyers who are prioritizing lifestyle, outdoor space, and a quieter environment, while still staying within reach of West Hartford and surrounding areas.
Then there is Glastonbury, which offers a different direction geographically but still competes closely with West Hartford in terms of demand. It has its own strong identity, with a mix of residential areas, amenities, and accessibility. Buyers who are open to crossing the river often find it to be a comparable option.
Each of these towns shares something important. They all benefit from their proximity to West Hartford while offering a slightly different version of what living in the area feels like.
What often surprises buyers is how much more flexibility they gain by expanding their search. In some cases, you can find more space for the same price. In others, you may find a better fit for your lifestyle without sacrificing location.
The tradeoff usually comes down to convenience versus space. The closer you stay to West Hartford Center, the more walkability and access you have. As you move outward into towns like Avon or Simsbury, you gain more space and privacy, but rely a bit more on driving.
There is no single “best” town. It depends entirely on what you are prioritizing.
If you are starting your search focused on West Hartford, it is worth taking the time to look at nearby towns as well. In many cases, that is where buyers find the best overall fit.
Understanding how each town compares can open up more options and help you approach the market with a clearer strategy.
